Patterns of Evolution
Gradualism
-
Example: The stripes of a tiger developing over the years so they have the ability to hide in the tall grass.
Speciation
Definition: Creation of a new species by evolution from pre-existing species. There are types of speciation including allopatric and parapatric speciation.
Example: The Galapagos finch were put on the islands of the Galapagos and grew to be two different species and isolated due to the ocean.
Divergent evolution
-
Example: Great apes weren't evolved from lesser apes but they have one common ancestor that created two different species over divergent evolution.
Punctuated equilibrium
Example: A species of sea animals lives, breeds, and then dies for thousands of years.
-
Coevolution
Definition: Takes place when two populations create a specialized relationship that change when interacting with each other.
Example: Bird eats a mimic butterfly, the butterfly evolves to look more like an inedible Monarch. It increases chance that a Monarch will be eaten by birds without knowing. The monarch evolves to look less like the mimic and is inedible to birds. The bird then changes to figure out how to spot a different species of butterflies (monarch or mimic).
