different pattens of evolution
Speciation
the forming of a new species by evolution from a pre-existing species.
ex: Darwin’s finches
Gradualism
Slow, constant changes over a long period of time.
ex: the stripes of a tiger developing over time so they are better able to hide in tall grass.
Punctuated equilibrium
Bursts of change followed by periods of stability.
ex: Land Snails of Bermuda
Divergent evolution
A number of different species arise from one common ancestor.
ex: The Kit Fox and the Arctic Fox
Convergent evolution
when unrelated species evolve similar characteristics because they live in similar environments.
ex: the similar nature of the flight/wings of insects, birds, pterosaurs, and bats
Coevolution
when two populations of organisms form a specialized relationship and thus change in response to each other.
ex: The mutualistic relationship between acacia plants and acacia ants
Extinction
the elimination of a species
ex: Catarina Pupfish
