REPRODUCTION (ER 3.1)
Uterus
Retained Placenta
-
-
-
Cause
Dystocia
only 2-3%
Excessive handling during dystocia => swelling of endometrium => increased strength of cotyledon-caruncle junction leading to retention of placenta
- takes 7-10d for autolysis to occur before removed
-
-
-
Clinical Metritis
10-21d
-
Usually not as sick: ~pyrexic, HR <100, decreased appetite, ~milk drop
-
-
Mummified Foetus
-
PGF2-alpha
- often still have CL with this condn
-
Induction
Induce Abortion
-
40mg PG (~100% effective)
-
-
5-6 months gestation
-
-
-
-
Inducing an advanced preganacy = Not advised
- can lead to dystocia, cow mightn't open up to pass calf etc
Induce Parturition
Normally, foetal steroids cause decreased progesterone and increased oestrogen and PgF2α
- Normally foetal steroids act on placenta to activate enzymes progestagens to androgens to oestrogens.
- Oestrogen acts on uterus get Pg which acts on oxytocin receptors, also luteolysis by Pg
Post day 270 - PgF2α (25-30mg) expect parturition within 48hrs
(not as accurate, req. 2ns Tx, hard to predict)
Post day 270 – SA dex (live calf) 20-30mg expect parturition within 3 days (RFM) (colostrum quality)
(more accurate but also generally req. 2nd Tx)

Induce Oestrus
-
True anoestrus
-
-
For sucklers - taking the calf off the cow for periods of time or letting calf into the cow 2/3 times a day can help to bring calf into heat
-
PRIDs/CIDRs
-
-
Remove after 8 days induces LH surge, inseminate at observed heat
-
Giving Pg day before reduces spread of oestrus by getting rid of any existing CL tissue before prid pulled.
GnRH
-
-
-
Folligon (PMSG)
- LH & FSH effect - great for sucklers
- Need FSH surge to counteract negative effect of suckling on oestrus
USE
Induces the release of LH and FSH
can only trigger rise after 8-10 days PP - pituitary is non-responsive before that
-
Prostaglandins
Prosolvin - Luprostiol 15mg i/m (analog)
1ml for heifer, 2ml for cow
-
-
-
-
USE
Therapeutic
Chronic endometritis, pyometra and mummified foetuses
-
-
-
-
Breeding Management
-
Fixed time AI
Synchronisation of a group by injecting with PGF2α twice with an interval of 11-13 days and inseminating 72-96 hours after second injection
-
- Pregnancy maintenance is dependent upon progesterone.
- To d150 CL mandatory source so PG good.
- From 250d CL necessary again.
- Decreasing placental progesterone assoc with increasing oestrogen prod.
- C’steroids act on placenta to supress progesterone and increase oestrogen which leads to Pg production from placenta.
- C’steroids useful from d180. Between 150-180 need combination of both.
- For c’steroid then need a functioning placenta so need live calf.
