        Olivia's unruly uncle who finds an ally, and eventually a partner, in Maria. Olivia's uncle, Sir Toby Belch, is criticized by Maria, for being drunk and upsetting the peace of his mourning niece, Olivia but he doesn't care. Toby, Maria and Feste imprison Malvolio in a dark dungeon.
      - A beautiful and noble Illyrian lady who is courted by Orsino and Sir Andrew, but who pines for Cesario. Olivia falls in love with Cesario (Viola). Olivia meets Sebastian and, believes him to be Cesario, she is ecstatic when he agrees to marry her immediately.

        The clown, or fool, of Olivia's household. Feste, Olivia's jester, teases his mistress out of her sadness but Malvolio, her steward, does not find him funny. Feste, Sir Toby and Sir Andrew get very drunk and create scene in the middle of the night.
      - The play's protagonist who disguises herself as a young woman calling herself "Cesario", and falls in love with Orsino - even as Olivia, the woman Orsino is courting, falls in love with Cesario.
