Safe Learning Environment, Well-Practiced Procedures in the Classroom,…
Safe Learning Environment
A hungry, sad, or scared student cannot learn.
This is important because:
By creating a safe and nurturing classroom environment, teachers create a space for students to feel valued and cared for.
This is important because:
Teachers need to begin each school year fresh, especially when there are a fresh batch of students - this is not just for classroom teachers - all teachers, specials, etc, need to restart the school year with firm and clear expectations for safety, management and procedures.
This is important because:
When a student is experiencing trauma, the ability to focus and learn becomes difficult.
Well-Practiced Procedures in the Classroom
This important because:
A classroom without solid procedures and expectations is a breeding ground for misbehaviors and management problems causing issues with safety and wellbeing.
This is important because:
When the classroom procedures are clear and understood, then safety and wellbeing will follow naturally.
Procedures make for day-to-day tasks to be well-oiled and facilitate organization in the classroom.
This is important because:
When students know the procedures and expectations, then other activities, lessons, and learning can more naturally occur throughout each day.
Commitment to Continued Growth in Teaching
A teacher-leader should be looking for ways to improve their own craft, as well as guiding others around them on ways to improve theirs as well.
This is important because:
There are numerous groups via social media where one can collaborate with other teachers in their field/discipline to gather and share ideas.
This is important because:
Standards are always being reviewed and revised, and the use of technology and best practices is changing and new practices need to be developed to stay relevant.
This is important because:
Finding professional development opportunities that cater to your discipline will keep ideas fresh and motivation to take risks.
Professionalism in the Public Eye (and in your school's eye)
Modeling to students how to be a good citizen, as well as modeling to students how to work well with others within our own school buildings.
This is important because:
Teachers should hold a professional stance on all social media accounts.
This is important because:
When in our own buildings, communicating in a professional manner with our colleagues and administration is important to keep morale in a positive place.
If something is not going OK in your building, find a safe place with a colleague you trust, or an administrator that will hear you, and share your thoughts in private. Spewing thoughts to the entire school during meetings or in "Allstaff" emails is not the appropriate outlet.
This is important because:
No matter the inner workings of your school, being cautious with how things are worded or portrayed to the general public is important. We are seen as important in the community as educators, so we need to keep all comments and negativity out of social media and public discussion.
Organized Scope and Sequence
This allows for the teacher to more confidently and strongly facilitate lessons and learning for all students.
This is important because:
This will keep the teacher prioritized in what they should be teaching at any given time.
This is important because:
When planning for a new school year, schedule, calendar, and number of sections per grade level, this will help to facilitate a smoother transition into each new school year.
This is important because:
Assure students are learning age appropriate content and meeting standards.
Work with other staff in a Collaborative and Respectful Manner
Creating an open and nurturing work environment is just as important as creating an open and nurturing classroom environment.
This is important because:
Having this type of comradery will allow for more discussions on building cross-curricular connections and collaborations.
This is important because:
It will create a positive work environment. One where staff are comfortable with each other and feel safe to share thoughts, ideas, concerns, and celebrations.
This is important because:
We can model appropriate behavior for our students by showing how we converse with each other as adults in our school, this will flow through to the expectations we have of them with their peers.
