ManzoValerieReproductive
Major functions of the Reproductive system
Female
produce eggs (ova)
providing a site for fertilization
provide the space and conditions to allow a baby to develop
Male
produce, maintain, and transport sperm
discharging the sperm w/ in the female reproductive tract during sexual intercourse
the production and secretion of male sex hormones responsible for maintaining the male reproductive system
Hormones of the reproductive system
Female
Lutenizing hormone (LH)
helps control the menstrual cycle
Estrogen
helps develop and maintain throughout the body
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
helps to control the menstrual cycle and stimulates the growth of eggs in the ovaries
Progesterone
helps maintain early stages of pregnancy
Male
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH),
stimulates testosterone production from the interstitial cells of the testes
Lutenizing hormone (LH)
causes the testicles to make testosterone, this is important for the production of sperm
Testosterone
helps with the development of male reproductive tissues such as testes and prostate
Disorders associated with the reproductive system
STD'S
HIV, chlamydia, genital herpes, genital warts, gonorrhea, some forms of hepatitis, syphilis, and trichomoniasis
Endometriosis
normally lines the inside of your uterus, the endometrium grows outside your uterus and most commonly involves the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining the pelvis
HIV/AIDS
a chronic & potentially life threatening condition that is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus; transmitted through contact with infected blood, semen, or vaginal fluids
STI
infection passed from one person to another person through sexual contact
Anatomy of female reproductive structures
Fallopian Tubes
transport the ova from the ovary to the uterus each month
Cervix
facilitates the passage of sperm into the uterine cavity
Uterus
nourishes and houses the fertilized egg until the fetus is ready to be delivered.
Ovary
production of eggs and hormones
Vagina
receives the penis during sexual intercourse & holds the sperm until it passes into the uterus
the passageway for childbirth
providing a passageway for blood from the uterus during a woman's monthly period
Anatomy of male reproductive structures
Testes
responsible for making testosterone & the primary male sex hormone, that is also responsible for producing sperm
Vas deferens
allows for the transportation of mature sperm to the urethra in preparation for ejaculation
Scrotum
bag of skin that holds and helps to protect the testicles
Seminal Vesicles
allow the production of many of the constituent ingredients of semen
Penis
the main role in male sexual function, the penis acts as a conduit for urine to leave the body
Prostate
production of a fluid that when combined with sperm cells from the testicles and fluids from other glands make up semen
Events of the female hormonal cycles
Luteal Phase
occurs after ovulation & before your period starts during this time, the lining of the uterus normally gets thicker to prepare for a possible pregnancy
Menstruation
also known as a period; vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of a woman's monthly cycle
Ovulation
the release of a mature egg from the surface of the ovary usually occurs mid-cycle; around 2 weeks before menstruation starts
Follicular Phase
the time between the 1st day of the period & ovulation; estrogen rises as an egg prepares to be released
