Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
Stimulates the development
Maturation of primary follicle
Luteinzing Hormone (LH)
LH and FSH rleased by anterior pituitary gland
Spike hormone will trigger ovulatoin
Gonadotropin release hormone (GnRH)
Stimulate anterior pituitary gland
Released by hypothalamus in the brain
Inhibin: decrease release of FSH by anterior pituitary gland
Events of the female hormonal cycles (be sure to include all categories)
Cycle runs 24-35 days
Two cycles: Ovarian/Uterine cycle
Ovarian Cycle: 1st cycle
Luteal hase (after ovulation)
Follicle expels the oocyte and the empty shell becomes Corpus Luteum
Corpus Luteum secretes progesterone, estrogen, and FSH
Day 15-28
Occurs in the ovaries leading to maturation and ovulation of the mature oocyte
Made up of follicular phase (before ovulation)
FSH causes follicular cells develop into primary follicle
Follicular cells secrete estrogen
1-14 days
Only 1 follicle secrete Graafian follicle
Ovulation
Triggered by sudden spike increase LH
Graafian follicle releases the oocyte

Uterine Cycle: 2nd cycle
Menstrual phase
Decline of estrogen and progstrone
spiral arteries contrict

cells become ischemic and die and shed off through bleeding

Proliferative phase (Before ovulation)
Estrogen stimulates growth of blood vessels of endometrium
Thickening of endometrium allows ovulated egg to be caught for implantation

Uterus prepares for ferilized egg
Occurs in the uterus to prepare it for a fertilizes ovum
Secretory phase (after ovulation)
In respone to rising levels of progesterone by corpus luteum
Uterus becomes ready for pregnancy
Day 15-28
Uterus gland enlarges and secrete nutrients to sustain the embryo
Prepares for implantation
Disorders associated withthe reproductive system(including STI’s)
Menopause
45-55 days
Ovaries no longer responsive to hormones
Menstrual cycle ceases
Ovaries secrete low levels of estrogen
Symptoms:
Dizziness
Headaches
Insomnia
Sleepiness
Hot flashes
Absense of pregnancy
Progesterone levels drop following decline in LH
Lead to menstraul phase (bleeding)
If pregnancy doesn't occur towrds the end phase, LH levels drop
Menstrual and Proliferative phase coincides with follicular phase of the ovarian cycle
Secrtory phase coincides with luteal phase of the ovarian cycle
