Used to collect qualitative data about user behaviours, activities and experiences over time
Data is self-reported by participants longitudinally, over an extended period of time that can range from a few days to a month or longer.
Useful for understanding long-term studies such as: Habits, Attitudes and motivations, Changes in behaviour and perceptions
Detailed record of what happened, which the researcher writes up as often as possible

Strengths

Sociologists are able to be more specific, recent information from participants for whom recall might pose a problem

Limitations
Need to have picked the right people to participate – this means people who are relevant to the research you are conducting.
The data is difficult to analyse or group so it is time-consuming to trawl through it all to find useful insights and pointers.
Need to be prompted, reminded and motivated to complete their recordings when they are supposed to.
