Material deprivation theorists believe that material deprivation refers to poverty and the lack of material necessities such as adequate housing and income, being the most important factor when looking at educational achievement and working class underachievement.
In 2006, oly 33% of pupils on free school meals gained 5 or more GCSEs at A* - C as opposed to the 61% of students not on free school meals.
