Reproductive System Madeline Gaytan Period 5
Major functions of the Reproductive system(male and female)
The first function of the female is to produce eggs
The 2nd function of the female is to protect and nourish the offspring until birth
The male's function is to produce and deposit sperm
the female reproductive system also has the structures necessary to allow sperm from a man to meet the ova of a woman
The male reproductive system is a grouping of organs that make up a man's reproductive and urinary systems
The uterus is one of the predominant organs of the female reproductive system
Anatomy of male reproductive structures
The male reproductive system includes the penis, scrotum, testes, epididymis, vas deferens, prostate, and seminal vesicles
the duct system, which is made up of the epididymis and the vas deferens
the accessory glands, which include the seminal vesicles and prostate gland
The penis is the male organ for sexual intercourse
The scrotum is the loose pouch-like sac of skin that hangs behind the penis
Anatomy of female reproductive structures
The female reproductive tract is all located within the pelvis.
The structures are the vulva, the vagina, the cervix, the uterus, the fallopian tubes and the ovaries
An female's internal reproductive organs are the vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix, and ovary
External structures include the mons pubis, pudendal cleft, labia majora and minora, vulva, Bartholin's gland, and the clitoris
The uterus is one of the predominant organs of the female reproductive system because it's an important function during pregnancy and childbirth
The interior membrane that lines the uterus is called the endometrium
Hormones of the reproductive system(male and female)
Oestrogen causes eggs to mature in ovaries once a girl hits puberty
The main reproductive hormones are oestrogen and testosterone
In the male, FSH and LH stimulate Sertoli cells and interstitial cells of Leydig in the testes to facilitate sperm production
The Leydig cells produce testosterone, which also is responsible for the secondary sexual characteristics of males
In females, FSH and LH cause estrogen and progesterone to be produced
FSH and LH are produced by the pituitary gland
There are four major hormones involved in the menstrual cycle: follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, estrogen, and progesterone for the female hormones
The primary hormones involved in the male reproductive system are follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and testosterone
Follicle-stimulating hormone is necessary for sperm production and luteinizing hormone stimulates the production of testosterone, which is also needed to make sperm
Events of the female hormonal cycles
The luteal phase begins after ovulation. It lasts about 14 days unless fertilization occurs and ends just before a menstrual period
The four phases of the menstrual cycle are menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation and the luteal phase
The ovarian cycle consists of three phases: follicular phase, ovulation, and luteal phase, whereas the uterine cycle is divided into menstruation, proliferative phase and secretory phase
Nine days after your luteal phase, which occurs during the second half of the menstrual cycle, after ovulation occurs so progesterone level is usually checked six to eight days after you ovulate
Disorders associated with the reproductive system(including STI’s)
Reproductive disorders are diseases involving the reproductive system, including reproductive tract infections, congenital abnormalities, cancers of the reproductive system and sexual dysfunction
One of the most common disorders is vaginitis. This is redness and itching of the vagina. A possible cause of vaginitis can be a yeast infection
Endometriosis (MedlinePlus) Endometriosis is a problem affecting a woman's uterus. The place where a baby grows when a woman is pregnant
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Interstitial Cystitis, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome,HIV/AIDS,Gynecologic Cancer
