Based on operant conditioning; reinforces desirable behaviour with a token each time this behaviour is performed that can later be exchanged for a reward. In a prison, this behaviour could be avoiding conflict, following prison rules, etc. Tokens act as secondary reinforcers as they derive their value from their association with a reward. Rewards could include phone calls, time in the yard, extra cigarettes/ food. When the programme is first implemented, these behaviours and rewards would be clarified, while disobedience will result in tokens and rewards being withheld or removed as punishment.
