Aoki was friends with Huey Newton and Bobby Seale, who founded the Black Panther Party, after they went to college together at Merritt College.
Aoki was one of many Asian-Americans in the Black Panther Party, but he was the only one with a leadership position.

FBI
Richard Aoki was an informant for the FBI as a part of the COINTELPROGRAM. He filed reports on the activities of various organizations in the San Francisco Bay area for the FBI.
His position as an informant was revealed after a 2012 FOIA request by journalist Seth Rosenfeld to obtain FBI documents on Aoki, but he was revealed as an FBI informant in 1967.

Military Career
Aoki joined the Army straight out of high school, serving for one year active duty and 7 years in the reserves.
During his time in the Army, he became a weapons expert.
In an interview, Aoki stated that he wanted to be a career soldier and wanted to be the very first Japanese-American general in the United States Army and work his way up through the ranks.
