ECONOMIC EFFECTS
Russian government spent 17 billion Roubles on the war between 1914-17 which was 15x the amount spent on the Russo-Japanese war in 1905.
Prohibition in 1914 meant that the 25% of taxes made up from vodka sales declined and the government had to reclaim this money and increase national debt.
Areas captured by the Germans were some of the most important for resources such as coal mining areas of Poland
Germany blocked trade routes - no trade with allies
Military banned grain exports and requisitioned it to feed Russians but revenue fell
15,000,000 men were sent to fight in the war - 1915 over 500 factories closed
Inflation - government printed more money
SOCIAL EFFECTS
Not enough food supplied to the cities - rotting in wagons
Working class struggled to afford food due to low wages and inflation
Peasants sold less of their grain because there was little to buy with the money made
Middle class people lost their savings in banks
Number of jobs in cities fell - first 3 months 150,000 workers lost their jobs
FEATURES
The war originally boosted the tsarist support as the nation was patriotic
Germany used its efficient railway system to move troops quickly to places of attack
German victory in Tannenberg August 1914
Russia lost 122,000 men and supplies and weapons in Tannenberg
By 1915 2 million men had died and Russia was in retreat
August 1915 Tsar Nicholas II takes personal command of the Russian Army
