FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY: OFFENDER PROFILING - Coggle Diagram

- - - - the signature methods (modus operandi) correlate with social and psychological characteristics
  - - - plan the crime in advance, eg. deliberately target a victim, prepare for the crime, maintain control throughout the crime, leave few clues
      - have above-average intelligence; work in a skilled/professional occupation; socially and sexually competent; often married with children
    - - no evidence of planning - impulsively offend, leave the body at the scene, do not maintain control during the crime
      - lower than average IQ; unskilled work/ unemployed; sexual dysfunction; failed relationships; live alone; often live relatively close to where the offence took place

        details of an offence are matched against the database to 1. reveal information about the offender, such as their personal history, family background 2. determine if offences are linked or commited by the same offender.
    - - eg. Dwyer, 2001: some rapists want to maintain control and humiliate their victims while others are more apologetic, which can tell police about how they relate to women generally
  - - - used in conjunction with investigative psychology to create hypotheses about how the offender is thinking, as well as their modus operandi
      - determine a 'centre of gravity', which includes the offender's base (usually in the centre) and to identify where the offender will target next 'jeopardy surface'
    - - marauder - operates in close proximity to their home base
      - commuter - travels a distance away from their usual residence to commit a crime
