Girl in Pieces
Quotes:
"The girls here, they try to get me to talk."
The girls piss and hiss about the schedule, the food, Group, the meds, everything, but I don’t care. There’s food, and a bed, and it’s warm, and I am inside, and I am safe. My name is not Sue
Issues:
The main character seems to be socially awkward, unwilling to talk to others. As the others there try to communicate with them, they never respond.
This failure to communicate with others can and will lead to issues in the future, failure to communicate your opinions or emotions will lead to issues. The other girls assign the main character a name, they don't speak out against it and allow them to assign them a name.
Darius the Great Is Not Okay
Quotes:
"I got so bad, I was thinking about it. All the time. DR Howell put me on a pretty strong tranquilizer" "um" "it made me into a zombie. That's why I couldn't tell you stories. I could barely tell the time of day" "I didn't know" “I lost myself for a long time, Darius. I didn’t like who I became on those pills, but they saved my life. They kept me here. For you. And your mom. And by the time I was doing better and Dr. Howell tapered me off, your sister was born and I just...things were different. She was a baby, and she needed me. And I didn’t know if you even wanted stories anymore. If you were ever going to forgive me."
"And it kills me that I gave it to you, Darius. It kills me.
Issues:
One of the issues I see is a lack of communication. Although the boy was young at the time, it may have been better if he had told him when he grew up a little bit. Or if he explained to him when he was younger that the doctors did something to help him but it also changed him.
Another issue they have is depression, this takes time and effort to try and get past it. It's mentioned that they both have it.
Winter girls
issues:
quotes:
"I won’t pollute my insides with Bluberridazzlepops or muffins or scritchscratchy shards of toast, either. Yesterday’s dirt and mistakes have moved through me. I am shiny and pink inside, clean. Empty is good. Empty is strong."
Did I eat breakfast? Of course not. Did I eat dinner the night before, or lunch, or anything?
My edges blurred. Black squiggle tingles curled up my spine and wrapped around my eyes like a silk scarf. The car in front of us disappeared. The steering wheel, the dashboard, vanished. There was no Cassie, no traffic light. How was I supposed to stop this thing?
The main character doesn't eat healthy foods, sometimes they didn't eat at all that day. This leads to fatigue, tiredness, and the lack of will to do anything.
