Central Highlands : Extending from east to west and through central Europe to the west, it includes western France, Belgium, southern Germany, the Czech Republic and parts of northern Switzerland and Austria. This region is sparsely populated, except in the valleys of the Rhine, Rohne, Elbe and Danube valleys.
