Primarily important information
Europeans couldn't and didn't want to explore other lands until 1400
They decided to change when the wish of richness and power, as well as the wish to spread christianity came to be in the early 1400s
Europeans wanted to spread Christianity due to hard feelings with muslims
Europeans like Bartolomeu Dias wanted to convert non-christians around the globe
Europeans started to grow interested in trade routes once they became eager to explore the east
Traders and merchants wanted to take advantage of the expeditions
They wanted the spices that were given to them during the crusades
Nutmeg, Ginger, cinnamon, pepper, etc
Italians and muslims controlled the trade routes between east and west.
Muslims sold Asian goods and products to Italians and Europeans
Italians resold at higher prices
after years of sailing, portugueese fleets start heading towards the African coasts
They traded goods AND slaves alike in Africa
Secondarily important information
the "need" for adventure made the europeans want to explore the rest of the world
The desire of power was encouraged by the advances in both technology and sailing
It was nearly impossible for a sailer or captain to "tour" 3,000 miles of oceans in boat back in the 1200's
European ships were uncapable of sailing against the wind's direction
Europeans wanted new sources of wealth

1419: Prince Henry founds a sailing school in Portugal
1492: Christopher Colombus convinces Spain to found his expedition
1493: Tenseness between Portugal and Spain is calmed by pope Alexander IV
1494: Treaty of Tordesillas is signed between Portugal and Spain (honoring the territory division)
1509: Portugal extends control over the area the muslims controlled
