SOCIETY
Society was divided into various classes:
The petite bourgeoisie
It consisted of
Small-scale traders
Labourers
Artisans
They had to pay taxes and badly affected by the crises
The peasants
They formed the majority of the population
Their situation was very precarious
The haute bourgeoisie
It consisted of
Bankers
High public officials
Important traders
They continued to prosper
The beggars
They increased in number
They had to beg or depend on charity to survive
The nobility
They didn't pay taxes
They had political or military obligations but they dedicated most of their time to leisure activities such as hunting
They lived in palaces
They obtained rents or income from their lands
In Atlantic Protestant Europe
Bourgeois traders prospered
They became more powerful
they gained access to political positions
They became part of the privileged class
In Southern Catholic Europe
The economy barely recovered
The privileged classes maintained their positions of power and continued to reject any manual work
Their objective was to:
Live off the rents they received from their lands and possessions
Accumulate noble titles
When the monarchs needed to increase their resources, they increased the taxes
Sometimes this resulted in social revolts
In each kingdom, there were different motives for the revolts
France: politically motivated
British Isles: political motives were combined with religious rivalries
Spain: they were led by secessionist movements
Russia: they were due to ethnic divisions
The different rates at which the economies developed also caused social differences
