Generation of computers
Genearation 1
First Generation. The period 1940 to 1956, roughly considered as the First Generation of Computer.
The First generation of computers Refers to the time when the first machines capable of processing digital information were developed. This stage is located between 1942 and 1958. These first computers were designed for specific purposes, especially military and academic. Their technology was very limited and this made them large, expensive and very slow in their operation.
The first generation of computers was based on vacuum tubes that had the function of storing information. Although they were quite limited, these tubes were the first technology that allowed the digital processing of data. For a single computer, thousands of vacuum tubes were needed, which meant that they were very large. So large that they even occupied entire rooms. They needed a lot of electricity for their operation and they had to stay continuously on.
The first generation of computers generated in the mid-twentieth century had the first indication or antecedent of modern computers, but among its main characteristics were its large size as well as its high cost of acquisition, and the recurrent theme of failures and errors for being experimental.
