The Reproductive System Yasmin Reyes Anatomy P.3
Major Function of the Female's Reproductive system
Functions in producing female gamete (ovum or egg) and preparation for support of developing embryo during pregnancy
Ductus System- delivery of female gamete
Uterus
Vagina
Uterine
Ovaries - primary female sex organs
Major Function of a Male's Reproductive System
Process by which new individuals (offspring) of a species are produced
Fertilization- fusion of egg and sperm that produces a zygote
Gonads= primary sex organs
Sexual reproduction- reproduction involving two (male and female) parents; offspring is genetically different than parent
Male Reproductive Structure
Functions to produce and disseminate a large quantity of male gametes (sex cells= sperm)
Sperms- male gamete (primary)
Testes- primary sex organ (primary)
Ductus system
delivery of male gamete (sperm)
Urethra
Ductus deferens
Epididymis
Accessory organs= secondary sex organs
Prostate gland
Bulbourethral gland
Seminal vessels
External genitalia
Penis
Strotum
Female Reproductive structures
Ovaries= primary female sex organs
Support for the ovaries
Broad ligament- encloses suspensory ligament
Ovarian ligament- attach ovary to uterus
Suspensory ligaments- secures ovary to lateral
Ductus System- Delivery of female gamete
Uterus
Vagina
Uterine
External Genitalia
Labia
Vestibule
Mon Pubis
Clitoris
Hormones of the Female Reproductive
Follicle Stimulating Hormone
Stimulates the development and maturation of primary follice into secondary follicle
Luteinizing Hormone
Spike of hormone will trigger ovulation of the most mature follice (only one)
Gonadotropin releasing hormone
Released by hypothalumus in the brain to stimulate anterior pituitary gland to release LH and FSH
Inbibin
Decreases release of FSH by anterior pituitary gland
Estrogen
Stimulates growth of uterus, vaginal, necessary for ovum maturation
Hormones of the Male Reproductive
Testosterone
Development of male reproductive tissues such as testes and prostate
Sperm
Males- 14 years of age will start producing sperm
Can produce several hundred million a day
Can live in the vagina- 72 hours
Mature spermatozoa takes about 74 days
Lives 30-60 days after maturation
Two cycles : Ovarian and Uterine cycle
Uterine (Menstruation) Cycle- Occurs in the uterus to prepare the uterus for implantation of the fertilized ovum
Ovarian cycle- occurs in the ovaries leading to the maturation and ovulation of the mature oocyte
Disorders associated with the Reproductive System
Gynecologic Center
Uterine Fibroids
HIV/AIDS
Endometriosis
Interstitial Cystitis
