confluences of organic-cultural flows that intensify joy and confront suffering by drawing on human and suprahuman forces to make homes and cross boundaries (54)
we never encounter religion in general, its a secondary category

confluence: flux or movement, "flowing width", religion is analagous to a gas/liquid than a stable static entity
religion cant be reduced to its social contexts or economics, but they are undeniably influenced by these factors
sacroscape
the idea of religion as confluences, or liquid, is a good metaphor here, because water leaves a trace even after it dries up or moves

this is often taken to the extreme, much more than people realize- it's interesting to think about what the US would be like if the influences of protestantism were filtered out.

collective and individual , nature vs nurture

joy and suffering
pain and ecstasy
i think it's really interesting how religions not only provide an avenue to negotiate these human experiences but also seems to combine them. in the events of my life where extremely exciting or tragic events happen and the normal thing to do seems to be to ritualize them and gather. when people that were close to me have died, the subsequent gathering and memory-sharing to others who were close to the deceased as well were happy memories, almost in an ecstatic sense, like coming together to celebrate something joyful.
"a lexicon of expression"- rituals, ceremonies, traditions
this is an excellent way, i think, to begin to define religion(s), because it is so applicable but so relevant at the same time, and doesn't necessitate the kinds of specificities and thematicism that other attempts at definition often do

im doing an independent study in religious psychology and focusing on gratitude as one of the pillars of religious/spiritual emotions. the effects that gratitude and appreciating whats around you have on mental health are insane
