Hormones
GnRH: released from hypothalamus, reaches anterior pituitary cells via hypothalamus portal system
LH
in women, helps control menstrual cycle & triggers release of egg from ovary
in men, causes testes to make testosterone
FSH
in men, helps control the production of sperm
in women, helps control the menstrual cycle & stimulate growth of egg

Female Hormonal Cycles
ovarian cycle

luteal phase: days 14-28

pregnancy= corpus luteum produces hormones that sustain pregnancy until placenta takes over, @ about 3 months
shortly after ovulation, estrogen levels drop

ovulation
each month after puberty, a select few primary oocytes are activated (release of an egg)
ballooning ovary wall ruptures, expelling secondary oocyte w/ its corona radiata into peritoneal cavity
1-2% of ovulations release more than 1 secondary oocyte, which if fertilized, results in fraternal twins
menstrual cycle

declining estrogen causes hot flashes, irritability & depression (in some), atrophy of reproductive organs & breasts, increased blood cholestrol levels & falling HDL
treatment: estrogen-progesterone preparations, but they may increase risk of heart disease, invasive breast cancer, & stroke; dimensia risk is also doubled
Disorders
testicular cancer
sign: painless, solid mass in testis

rare, but most common cancer in men ages 15-35
prostate cancer

digital exam screening, PSA levels can be checked but have high rate of false positives

cervical cancer
affects ~450,000 women each year, killing 50%

risks: cervical inflammation, or STIs, including HPV

breast cancer

risk factors: early onset of menstruation & menopause, no pregnancies or 1 pregnancy late in life, no or short periods of breat feeding, family history of breast cancer

treatment:radial mastectomy (removal of breasts), lumpectomy (exercision of only cancerous lump), radiation, or chemo
chlamydia

symptoms: urethritis, penile & vaginal discharges; abdominal, rectal, or testicular pain; painful intercourse; irregular menstrual cycle

male symptoms: urethritis, painful urination, pus discharge from penis
female symptoms: abdominal discomfort, vaginal discharge, or abdominal discharge

trichomoniasis
parasitic infection, more common in women
symptoms: 70% women have none, 30% have yellow-green vaginal discharge w/ strong odor
