water properties
capillary action
definition- the tendency of a liquid in a capillary tube or absorbent material to rise or fall as a result of surface tension.
-
We use capillary action in our every day lives because without it, plants wouldn't be able to get the water that they need to their leaves because the capillary action is what makes the water go from the roots to the leaves.
surface tension
definition-the tension of the surface film of a liquid caused by the attraction of the particles in the surface layer by the bulk of the liquid, which tends to minimize surface area.
-
Surface tension is used in everyday life because bugs use surface tension in order to "skate" across the top of the water
-
expands as a solid
definition- The orderly, crystalline way in which the hydrogen-bonds form causes density to decrease because each water molecule is held away from its neighbors at a distance equal to the length of the hydrogen bonds. Thus water expands as it freezes, and ice floats atop water.
-
It is used in everyday life because if you put a water bottle full of water in the freezer, the water will expand while it freezes and may make the water bottle misshapen or broken.
high specific heat
definition- Specific heat is defined by the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance 1 degree Celsius (°C).
-
We use high specific heat in our everyday lives by the if you bring water to school and you bring it in cold and during the day it becomes room temperature. That is because water has a high specific heat
hydrophobic
-
-
Hydrophobic is a property that we see everyday because not everything combines with water as easy as other things.
adhesion
-
Adhesion is used in every day life when you see water on the grass in the morning or dew, adhesion is the water property that allows the water to stick to the grass or plants.
-
-
cohesion
-
-
-
When you see raindrops on the window, cohesion is being used to keep those raindrop molecules together and look like the rain drop
hydrophilic
definition- having a tendency to mix with, dissolve in, or be wetted by water.
-
It is used in every day life because some thing do dissolve in water, such as things that are hydrophilic, and some things don't dissolve in water, hydrophobic.
