Antti Aarne is a Finnish folklorist who created A-T-U based on Julius Crohn's historical geography method and released the first version of A-T-U in German in 1910.

Folklorists from Germany have been studying folk tales and fairy tales since 1989, and made certain improvements and revisions to the A-T or Aarne-Thompson index in 2004.

Stith Thompson is a folklorist from the United States. Thompson in the Aarne–Thompson–Uther method comes from his name. He translated the original version of A-T-U in German into English. At the same time, he also created a brand new classification system called Motif-Index of Folk-Literature.
