Plasticity + localisation theory
Areas of the brain
Frontal lobe
Motor area
regulates movement
Brocha's area
speech production
Only found in the left Hemisphere
Parietal lobe
Somatosensory area
Processes sensory information; e.g. touch
Occipital lobe
Visual area
receives/processes visual information
Temporal lobe
Auditory area
analysis of speech-based information
Wernicke's area
language comprehension
only found in the left hemisphere
Localisation of function
The idea that different areas of the brain are responsible for different activities and functions
Evaluation
Strengths
Case studies on brain damage support localisation for example cases of Atresia (loss of language) are associated with Broca's area.
Tulving et al (1994) Brain scans suggested that different areas of the brain are responsible for independent actions.
criticisms
The holistic theory contradicts this as it states that all areas of the brain work together.
plasticity after damage to the brain means the brain does not follow localisation of function as functions are rewritten and relocated.
