"Class management and atmosphere"
What is an ideal teacher?
Abilities
We as teacher can learn to sing, to mime, to act, to draw.
Attitudes
We have to respect our pupils and be realistic about what they can manage
The one who help the children feel secure
Pupils need to know what is happening and they need to feel that you are in charge
Respect your pupils
Constant direct corrections is not effective and it doesn't help to create a good class atmosphere
Pupils shouldn't laugh at others mistakes
Establish routines
Give the children the responsability for doing practical jobs in the classrom
Avoid organised competition
Avoid giving physical rewards or prizes
Don't give children English names
The physical surroundings
Young children respond well to surroundings which are pleasant and familiar
Encorage the children to bring in objects and tell the rest of the class a little bit about them in English
Grouping the children
Helps to develope a group identity
Pairwork
useful and efficient way of working
Let pupils who are sitting near each other work together
Establish a routine for pairwork
While working everyone in the class is occupied
If you don't have an even number of pupils then let one group work as a three
Be on the lookout for pupils who simply do not like each other
Go through what you want pupils to do before you put them into their pairs
Grupwork
Everything said about pairwork applies to group work
Children should not be allowed to choose their groups because that means that someone is left out
Classroom Language
Teaching children classroom language helps their development, their language and their ability to communicate meaningfully in the classroom and elsewhere.
