A-T-U System
Stories are categorized by general themes. Each tale type has a number (might have a letter) and a name.
There are major categories such as Animal Tales, Fairy Tales, Religious Tales, and so on.
The tales are broken down further into more specific themes, motifs, etc., and are assigned a number to represent it and a name that summarizes the theme or motif.

Finally, they are broken down even further into variants of existing stories or strong similarities within stories and are assigned a single number.
Rumpelstiltskin - 500
This categorization puts all the information together. Stories categorized with AT 500 are all fairytales, include supernatural helpers, and the 500 tells us that these stories are all variations of the Rumpelstiltskin tale.

The Aarne-Thompson-Uther index or A-T-U index is a way of categorizing fairytales by similar themes or by variants of stories. It highlights the similarities between fairytales found throughout the world.
