Divide the children
Five to seven can:
Talk about what they are doing
Tell you about what they have done or heard
Plan activities
Argue for something
use logical reasoning
use a wide range of intonation patterns in their mother tonge
understand direct human interaction
Other characteristics
They know that the world is governed by rules
They undestand the situation more quickly than the language used
They use language skills before they are aware of them
Their own understanding comes through hands, eyes and ears
They are logical
They have a short attention and concentration span
Sometimes they have difficulties in knowing what is fact and what is fiction
Are often happy playing and working alone but in company of others
Adult world and child's world are not the same
Loves to play
Are enthusiastic and positive about learning
Eight to ten :
Their basic concepts are formed
They can tell the differences between fact and fiction
They ask questions all the time
They rely on the spoken word as well as the physical world to undestand
They know what they like and don't like doing
They begin to question the teacher's decisions
They are able to work with others and learn from them
They can:
Understand abstracts
Understand symbols
Generalise and systematise
What this means for our teaching
Words are not enough
Don't rely on the spoken word only
Play with the language
Let the pupils talk to themselves, sing songs, tell stories
Language as language
When pupils start to read, the language becomes something permanent
Variety in the classroom
Variety is a must, of activity, of pace, of organization, of voice
Rutines
Children benefit from knowing the rules
Cooperation not competition
Avoid rewards and prizes. Make room for shared esperiences. Goup children together whenever possible
Grammar
Children have an amazing ability to absorb language through play
Assessment
Even though formal assessment may not be a compulsory part of your work, it is always useful for the teacher to make regular notes about each child's progress
