Global trends in resource consumption
Growth of the Global Middle Class
Land and Food Consumption
Due to Poverty reduction their has been an increase in the food wanted and needed for the population. As it is more affordable as globalisation has caused a growth in the GMC.
More meat based diets
More land needed to grow and supply the meat meaning more land consumption
An increase in agriculture due to the growing population and GMC results in an increase in water consumption due to the irrigation of crop fields
Global meat production has increase massively since 1960. As Asian population increase higher demands for meat have been shown with the largest producer of meat in 2018 being 143.71 tonnes
China consumes their meat from America as they do not have the land to grow healthy animals. Also can not meet the meat demand
As well as their is a reduction in poverty and a population growth there is a growing demand for a certain lifestyle
China consumes 50% of the worlds Pork industry due to population growth
Having food imported means their is an increase in the ecological footprint because of transportation of goods and consumption
As well as energy needed to transport the meat meaning burning of fossil fuels
Countries with most food security are HIC and most Finland
Energy Consumptions
How much an energy production process uses.
As urbanisation and globalisation around the world is occurring it causes their to me a higher demand for product that is made by factories that needs energy to be able to function
To try and reduce EF there has been a lot of investment between HIC in renewable resources. However it is very expensive and the majority of it is unreliable as we do not have the developed technology.
Examples: Iceland 79% and Norway 66%
As there is a poverty reduction the economy develops and the people begin to lie a more expensive life style with more electricity and electronics meaning more energy consumption
Increase in EF as more use of natural resources
Trends in Water
Water availability has decreased as there has been an increase in water consumption. Due to the growth in the GMC and more demand for water and products using water .
1% of the world's water is usable/resourcesful by humans
Countries that have majority of water resources: Asia Pacific region and South America. However most conumsption is in other countries
Most Water consumption is in Japan, Westrern Europe, India, and North America
Consumption of water availability and consumption is mostly used for agriculture. As there is a population growth in the 1950's there has been an increase in the production of agriculture
More Land needed to produce crops and this causes there tobe many forest burnt down which releases a lot of carbon dioxide
More energy needed to clear the land and machinery to grow the corps as well as maintain the crops and livestock
As there is a poverty reduction which is because of globalization and the GMC which causes more demand for a meat diet. Meat product also consume a lot of water meaning there is an increase in water consumption worldwide
Ecological Foot Prints
Measure of the human demand on Earth's resources
Countries that have a High EF have a lot of natural resources and have a high development rate. For example, UAE, Qatar, China, USA, and Canada.
These countries tend to have high energy consumption rates
As there is a growth in the GMC their is an increase in ecological footprint around the world as globalisation is caused more opportunity for consumption.
Due to the GMC and poverty reduction there is a hgiher amoutn of purchasing of cars which means there are more consumption and use of gas and fuel to power cars. Which have a great EF footprint
Poverty Reduction
Extreme Poverty is living less than $1.00 a day
1800's=85% poverty vs 2015= 12% poverty
How globalistantion helped boost many peoples income and hlped them out of poverty
Develoment and increase in Jobs around the world. Specifically China and how they were able to reduce poverty to 2% with their economics boom
Poverty reduction occurred because the UN set goals aka millenium development goals.
With poverty reduction and a increase in development there is more opportunity for a country to improve economically and financially
Increase in global trade due to the growth of the middle class has caused a pvierty reduction
Increase in trade means more energy consumption as there is more middle class energy consumption. Consumption rose from 28,516 TWh to 173,340 TWh
This could be due to the fact that with the GMC more bigger houses, more cars, and more utilities are available to use
More opportunity for food and water consumption meaning more availability to meat based diets which need a lot of water and land to grow
