The National Party was made in 1948 of only whites, who were the 14% minority.
Mandela was a part of the 1952 campaign with riots around the country. They proposed the Freedom Charter by the Congress of People in 1955.
On December 5, 1956, Mandela and 155 others were put on trial for treason yet were found not guilty. There was a militant group split off in 1959 to form the PAC.
The police opened fire on peaceful protesters and riots began causing the government to ban the PAC and the National Party.
Mandela co-formed the MK and gave a sabotage campaign against the government. He was arrested on August 5 for 5 years in prison and was found to be planning another attack. He was found guilty.

Mandela remained a champion on world peace around the world. He established various organizations to stop global problems.
He also came into the AIDS awareness member in 2002 as the disease affected South Africans the most in the world.
He was treated for cancer in 2001 and due to his deteriorating health and cancelled various meetings due to it.
In 2009, the UN declared ‘Nelson Mandela Day’ in recognition of him and other South African leaders.
Mandela died on December 5, 2013, due to a lung infection.
Mandela spent 18 of 27 years in prison in Robben Island Prison where he was confined to a small cell without a bed.
The prisoners were put to hard labor and as black prisoners, had less food and facilities compared to others.
There were various inhuman punishments given for the smallest of actions. Mandela was known quite famously even while in prison.
In 1982, Mandela was put into Pollsmoor Prison and in 1988, under house arrest. F.W.de.Klerk removed the ban on National Party and ordered Mandela’s release in 1990.

On April 20, 1994, 22 million South Africans gave votes in the first multiracial election. ANC easily won and Mandela became the first black president of South Africa.
Mandela helped various programs supporting peace and justice and created a strong central government in which no minority could discriminate.
He also improved relations between the races. In 1993, retired as a president at age 80.
