Social bonding in dogs
Introduction
Sociability for an organism evolved to either reduce risk from predation or increase the ability to seek and defend food.
Th quality and quantity of social relationships provides better mental health and reduces mortality.
-
Significance of study
Examining oxytocin (OT) in domestic dogs is important because we need to see how it enhances social motivation when dealing with humans.
What to look for
“If brain OT regulates the formation and maintenance of social bond, we should find dogs giving OT more positive behaviors toward partners” (Romero et al. 2014).

Methods
-
After treatment, the dogs stayed in a room for 60 minutes with their owners not interacting with them. Their behavior was observed.
-
Affiliation, social proximity, social approach, and social orientation were all measured behaviors.
-
Results
-
With dog partners
Affiliation was affected by the treatment not by “sex, pretext OT levels, or kinship” (Romero et al. 2014).
No significance of treatment, sex, protest OT levels, or kinship were found.
