Butt Joint - Joining two pieces of timber together, relies on adhesives such as PVA. Easy to join, but not as strong. Used in Light weight boxes
Dowel Joint - Holes are created and round pegs are used to connect them. Simple, stronger than butt joint, cost effective, easy to use. It can easily be taken apart, and used in flat pack furniture
Mitre Joint - Pieces are joint together at 45 degrees angles forming a flush 90 degree corner. Simple, effective, jigs can be used to aid it. Can break apart easily, used in light weight boxes, frames
Comb Joint - Made from interlocking fingers which tightly fit together. Accurate work can result in a strong, aesthetically pleasing joint. Large surface area for glue. Machine often might be required to make the work consistent and accurate, used in small boxes and frames
Dovetail joint - Joints are interlocked together. Their strength relies on interlocking fingers and accurate marking and cutting. Has a strong directional force making it perfect for drawers. Once glued together it is impossible to pull apart. Used in construction, cabinets boxes.
Mortise & Tenon joint - Used to make heavy duty items. Involves making a hole known as mortise and a slot in the other piece of wood. Its super strong, large gluing surface area, difficult to make, and used in construction and frameworks.
Housing joint - A groove is cut across one piece and the end of the second piece is inserted into it
Half lap - Made by cutting a step in the end of each piece, Its quick and easy to make, and is structurally strong. Used in frames and doors
Modesty blocks- are small, rigid, polymer blocks. They have moulded holes that take screws which are used to join the block to panels. Typically, this type of block might be used on cupboards and storage units. It is simple to use but it does not make a strong joint and is unattractive.
Cam fittings - require highly accurate pre-drilled holes to function properly. Consists of a metal dowel that is screwed into one of the pieces by inserting a screwdriver into the slot on the side. When the disk is rotated with the screwdriver, the collar on the dowel locks into the cam and pulls both pieces together.
Barrel nut and Bolt - Uses a cross dowel that is fitted into one of the pieces to be joined. The bolt is inserted through the other pieces to be joined. The bolt is inserted through the other piece of timber and tightened into the cross dowel. These are used to assemble furniture with large frameworks such as beds, chairs and tables. These fittings have excellent sheer strength and clamping force ideal for large, load bearing furniture.
Knock-down fittings - Knock down fittings are used to manufacture flat-pack furniture. They enable manufactures to supply products that are not assembled, therefore reducing the cost for both the manufacture and customer. This reduced the making time, and makes it much easier to store the products and transport them. For the customer, KD fittings are relatively easy to use with a limited number of simple tools
Lamination - Thin veneers or flexible plywood are glued together to make a permanent curved profile. 1) Moulds are preapred. The mould must allow for the thickness of the laminate. 2) Even coatings of glue are then applied which give uniform strength to the laminate. 3) Wood veneers are then placed over a former and dried.
Vacuum forming - 1) Laminate is placed on a one-part mould and encapsulated in a heavy duty polythene bag. 2) A pump sucks the air from the sealed bag. 3) The pressure forces the laminate into position
Turning on a lathe - Lathes hold and spin the workpiece while cutting tools are presented to waste away wood bit by bit.
Turning between centers - Used to create long cylindrical forms such as spindles and chair legs. Turning between centers allow the spindle to machined to a reduce diameter.
Turning on a faceplate - Used to machine items such as domes and bowls. It involves screwing a thick piece of timber to a face plate, where it can be machined to turn the outside circumference and to remove the inside in order to make the bowl.

Routing - Can make slots or holes to make decorative moldings. Used to machine profiles and joints and cut slots and holes of various depths.
Milling timber - Milling machines run at a slow speed to make milling accurate. It is used for small jobs, such as prototypes. They can be operated manually or numerically controlled.
Slot machines - Specialist router bits can be used to machine slots and channels. The shape and size of the channel or slot depends on the profile of the router bit.
Teak oil - Available in clear tint. Used for outdoor products. Improves weather resistance, fungal and insect attack.

Yacht varnish - Available in high gloss and satin. Suitable for woods outside and frames. Increase toughness and hardness and weather resistance.
Polyurethane varnish - Available in gloss, satin & matt. Available in clear colours. Provides a hard, tough, waterproof, finish.
Wax - Available in clear and coloured waxes for indoor products. Limited protection against moisture and scratch. Increases surface hardness and toughness.
Pressure treating - Wood is placed in a pressure vessel containing a solution consisting of a copper sulphate and other preservatives. Pressure is controlled to force the preservative deep inside the wood. Helps protect wood for up to 50 years.
