A Critique of Current Thinking in Sustainable Tourism Management
Green Tourist
No consumer action in the late 1980s about boycott CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons)
Little evidence about switching private car to public transport for holiday
Little evidence of against the environmental impacts of the new theme Parks
Insisting that the hotels recycle their waste
Green Tourist Critiques
Proper education about being an green tourist should be stressed by holding campaign or school education
Instead of asking people to switching to public transport instead of using private car, the government should add more public transport and make sure all the public transports are on time just like in Japan and Korea
Most of the buses in Malaysia are not too convenient and not on time due to small amount of buses available.
The community need to corporate and choose green hotel to encourage the hotel to be green to maximize the profit
Ecotourism
Ecotourism is less harmful and more sustainable than mass tourism
Treks in the Himalayan rangr
Whale watching from California to the Arctic
Sledge tours in Lapland
River trips by canoe in South East Asia
Critiques
In small size of group so it might be expensive
some of the ecotourist are not really motivated to protect the environment but more to see the native ecosystem itself
Somehow it also can give negative impact to the environment - impact of using boat/ferry to watch the whale to the sea and underwater creature.
The Concept of Carrying Capacity
Environmental - the number of tourist can be accommodated before the damage begins
Local community start to suffer economic problems
The number of tourist can affect the experience of the tourists itself
Critiques on concept of carrying capacity
The more the number of tourist the more the negative impact could happen at the destination attraction
If the place is crowded with the tourist, it can affect the experience of the tourist itself as they cannot enjoy their trip with more freedom.
If the carrying capacity is too low, it can affect the profit margin of the local people as service provider at the place.
De-marketing
It manipulate the marketing mix or four Ps' to discourage rather than attract people to visit the destination
Reducing the amount of brochures to promote the destination
People aware of the place from relatives and friends
Repeat visitors who are already aware about the existence of the places
Higher prices
De-marketing Critiques
It oppose the marketing mix but kind of working as steps for environmental protection
Putting higher price will limit the tourist as only people with higher income can afford to visit the place plus minimize the impact to the environment
Minimize the used of brochures are very good action as it is not only reduce the tourist but also save the use of paper.
Tourist Education
Educate tourists to be more concerned about the environment
Argument about focusing link between tourism and HIV are more importance
Well meaning education campaign
Tourist Education critiques
Education is very importance as many people do not have any knowledge how importance of taking care the environment
Campaign is a very effective way as an informal education
Both HIV and environmental problem are different from each other and people need to focus both instead of choose one of problem
The Principle of Partnership
Sustainable tourism cannot be achieved only by public sector policy alone
The visitor and Convention Bureaux, funded by both the public and private sectors.
Private sectors can generally afford to have a short term perspective
Principle of partnership critiques
Having partnership with private sectors are really helpful in terms on financial and expertise.
Both parties having hardship as they speak different languages. Both parties need to understand each other's needs and constraints.
Most of the public sectors lack the budget or expertise to have significant impact on the tourism industry
