The Kite Runner
Amir
Amir is a privileged boy who lives a lavish life due to his father's wealth. He is also a Pashtun meaning that they are the 'superior race' and that also contributes to his nice life.
Betrayal
Amir betrayed Hassan by letting him get raped by Assef and not intervening to help him just so that he can get the kite and show Baba for some type of approval
"I could step into that alley and stand up for Hassan - the way he'd stood up for me all those times in the past - and accept whatever would happen to me. Or I could run."
He furthers betrays Hassan and Ali now by driving them out of the house they lived in all these years
-
Redemption
His redemption starts after Hassan's rape as he betrayed a life long friendship. This act of redemption ends up bringing him back to Afghanistan to save Sohrab (Hassan's son)
Hassan
Loyalty
Hassan has shown loyalty throughout the whole novel as even when the worst came upon him he had handled it with great maturity and protected Amir to make sure he doesn't lose anything (Kite). He also mentions 'for you a thousands times over' which implies that he will never betray him.
Hassan's loyalty is shown when Assef was going to punch Amir however Hassan came in between them and threatened Assef to hit him with his slingshot which shows great loyalty and he is always there to keep Amir safe and out of trouble.
Friendship
Until his last breath Hassan made sure to always protect and maintain his friendship with Amir.He always seemed to understand Amir without Amir actually having to tell him anything.Hassan had written a letter to Amir in which he explains 'I have told much about you to Farzana jan and Sohrab, about us growing up together and playing games and running in the streets.'This just shows how proud he is of Amir and loves their friendship.
Baba
Independence
he represents independence as he lost his wife during childbirth and has created a really great reputation in Afghanistan which how how mentally strong he is.there is even reference to Amir talking about his dad fighting bulls which show great physical capability.
Betrayal
As truthful and honest we though Baba was he turned out to create the biggest betrayal between him and Ali as he had slept with Ali's wife making Hassan his son. This betrayal has caused a lot of depressive emotions to surface as it was hidden for so long and only revealed after Hassan's death.
Assef
Racism
Assef is know to be the most evil and racist character in the whole novel and this is seen through the way he acts with Hassan and Sohrab. He has always believed that the Pashtuns were the superior race and Hazaras were the least superior therefore he would always bully Hassan for his ethnic background
Villainy
Assef later on joins the Taliban and idolises Hitler and abuses his position to show that he is the great and in charge. His time with the Taliban makes him a really horrible person as he treated Sohrab so badly and beat up Amir causing him several injures
Ali
Faithful
Ali has represented faithfulness as he had stayed dedicated to Baba despite knowing what he did and had also tired to do everything in his power to protect Hassan even though he was very poor.he was one of the pitied character in the novel as he had to see the betrayal of Baba and the pause of Hassan and Amir's friendship
Kindness/loyalty
Ali represents kindness and loyalty in the novel as we see the qualities of Hassan quite parallel to him which show that ali is a great person morally.he is a character that everyone loved because of his pure qualities and that is what made him to stand out the most.
Sohrab
fragility
Sohrab had been living fine with his parent however when Assef took him he had to go through horrible experiences and that left him deeply traumatised as even when he came to America he was a very quite person.Sohrab show fragility as he so scared of being alone that he attempted to commit suicide.
bravery
Sohrab acts as an extension of Hassan as when Amir was getting beaten up Sohrab had hit Assef in the eye with a slingshot to which Hassandid the same thing as he had threatened Assef with the slingshot and told him he would make him 'one eyed Assef.'he has that same courage as Hassan even though he is quite fragile.
