water molecules, properties of water & role of water on living organisms
Bonding
-
-
-
-
cause O has a greater num of protons cause it bigger it has a greater attraction of the shred electrons, meaning the O atom has a slight negative charge & the H atoms have a slight positive charge
-
-
-
Density
most liquids become more dense when cooled but water is most dense at 4'C - below that it becomes less dense
ice less dense than water, it floats
happens cause below 4'C the alignment of the molecules changes & cause of this cold water rises & forms ice at the surface of cold water & not the rest cause ice is a very good insulator (meaning its very rare for a body of water to freeze through)
-
if formed from bottom up it would 1s freeze all the plants then quickly the rest of the water cause no surface ice to insulate it
Viscosity
-
the electrostatic attraction make it difficult for the water molecules to completely separate & become a gas
-
lakes, rivers, seas - flowing water, habitats
-
-
transparent medium - blood, xylem & phloem
Cohesion/surface tension
a drop of water is very spherical cause the molecules attract each other (cohesion) & this also happens at the surface too
-
-
-
Its a solvent
-
-
molecules/ions can interact & more in water, be transported
-
Secretions - tears, sweat, in the stomach
