LIPIDS - Coggle Diagram
LIPIDS
function
are structural components of cell membranes in the form of
phospholipids
contain two fatty acids joined together by a glycerol molecule
are found in all plants and animals
protect and support organs
provide energy storage
regulate the coagulation of organs
constitute some hormones
allow to transport fat-soluble vitamins
include
fats
are solid
oils
are liquid
fatty acids are the building blocks for lipids
they are made up of
hydrogen
oxygen
carbon
with a carboxyl group (-COOH) at one end
fatty acids can be
saturated
SFAs(saturated fatty acids)
have a molecule fully saturated with hydrogen atoms
unsaturated
MUFAs(monounsaturated fatty acids)
have only one double bonds between carbon atoms
PUFAs(polyunsaturated fatty acids)
have more than one double bond
Omega-3
can be found
in fish such as
tuna
halibut
salmon
algae
krill
some plants
nut oils
may reduce the risk of heart disease
Omega-6
come from vegetable oils
such as linoleic acid
help to stimulate the skin and hair growth
regulate metabolism
maintain the reproductive system in good condition
also called fats
consist mainly of hydrocarbons
they are
soluble in non-polar organic solvents
for example:
chloroform
acetone
ether
benzene
insoluble in water
are molecules that can be extracted from plants and animals
using non-polar solvents
