HIV Discourse and Health Disparities of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Communites
Purpose: How HIV discourse is negotiated and given meaning in the lives of young, male two-spirit leaders, when considering their communities’ and their own health and wellness
They are part of a second generation since the time of HIV/AIDS
Discourse Analysis of six qualitative interviews from the HONOR Project,
Main Points:
Two-spirit: counter historical and contemporary colonizing language around indigenous expressions of gender and sexuality
Two-spiritpeople face an increased number of public health problems including intersectional discrimination and stigma, histories of sexual and other victimization, substance use, and adversely affected mental health
this study sought to center attention on two-spiritpersons themselves and their process of identification in the face of HIV
DA is an empirically-driven, interpretive methodology based in psycho- and socio-linguistics – paying attention explicitly todiscourse, or “language-in-use”relative to social, political, and cultural formations
Discrete, spoken incidents of bothHIV and AIDS are largely absent within these narratives
-
Each of the participants gave voice to alcohol being a primary mental / health problem as well as instigator for such problems for both AIAN and (non- Native) gay persons

These health disparities are associated with discrimination, social stigma, and negative stereotypes
discrimination to a higher incidence of substance abuse, suicide and suicidal ideation, psychiatric disorders, and limited health-seeking behavior
GBT people of color must navigate additional layers of discrimination based on racism, ethnicity, and language
LGBT people also bear the chronic stress associated with systemic discrimination and barriers to access of necessary health ser- vices
Incorporating awareness education about these disparities and inequities into health professional school curricula and continuing education would allow students and health care providers to address personal feelings and perceptions regarding LGBT people, sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression in genera
Agree/Disagree/Thoughts: I enjoyed the personal story at the beginning of the article. I also agree with the author's recommendations for improved health care towards this population.
Agree/Disagree/Thoughts: This is a subject that I have never learned about. I now know the term two-spirit in this way and how HIV can affect this population.
