Potential approaches to thesis writing
Multi study PhD
AKA
Multi study (or multistudy/multi-study) PhD by thesis
Structure
Sections that fulfil the purposes of the chapters found in a 'traditional' thesis e.g. introduction, literature review etc
Chapters that bring the studies' findings together for analysis and discussion
Two (or more) studies that are complete in themselves, each of which answers the same research question(s) OR answers one or more different research questions that address the same overarching question(s)
Max 80,000 words
Characteristics
Studies are likely (but not obliged) to use different methodologies and/or methods
Journal articles are often mined from the constituent chapters (but are not presented as the chapters themselves like a PhD by pub/journal ready PhD)
PhD by publication
AKA
'by papers'
'by/through published works'
Characteristics
The primary purpose is to demonstrate the author's ability to conduct independent research that is communicated so as to make a contribution to knowledge
May be suitable for one who has significant prior research experience and has published a number of peer-reviewed articles or other scholarly publications
Depending on the university, the completed thesis must be submitted within six to twelve months of enrolling on the course
Usually consists of a set of papers published in peer-reviewed academic journals or edited volumes, plus an integrative chapter
Often, the published work has to have been produced before the candidate registers with the University
Structure
A general introduction chapter [1] (typically no more than 10,000 words that unifies the body of work thematically or methodologically and makes an argument for its contribution to knowledge)
Three journal-ready manuscripts [1]
Reference list

Important to note:
Please be aware that at the time of this writing, a PhD by publication is not a possibility at the Faculty of Education; however, an EdD by publication may be an option for someone able to make a compelling argument for its merit in relation to their research and who is able to obtain all requisite permission
See this FERSA blog for more information.
