Surveillance Technology & Its Impact On Privacy
Internet Surveillance
What is it?
The act of monitoring of computer activity and data being transferred over computer networks such as the Internet.
How?
A surveillance program installed on a computer can search the contents of the hard drive for suspicious data, can monitor computer use, collect passwords, and/or report back activities in real-time to its operator through the Internet connection.
Impact on privacy?
The information government services collected may have the chance of leaking. The important information of citizen are exposed and criminal may make use of these information.
Video Surveillance
How?
Wide Area Persistent Surveillance systems surveil a specific region in order to increase the opportunity to detect and observe activities, identify entities involved, and track events forward in real time or backwards.
What is it?
The act of observing a scene or scenes and looking for specific behaviors that are improper or that may indicate the emergence or existence of improper behavior.
Impact on privacy?
Can become privacy issue if the technology is misuse. (voyeurism, stalking women)
Satellite Surveillance
What is it?
A reconnaissance satellite or intelligence satellite (spy satellite) is an Earth observation satellite or communications satellite deployed for military or intelligence applications.
How?
Snapping high-resolution photographs, studying ground sites with radar.
Impact on privacy?
The government would spy on lives of citizens and invades their privacy. There is no room for private lives of citizens.
Some of the risks of abuse of satellite surveillance technology include industrial espionage, illegal spying on business rivals and countries, and stealing of classified information.
Database Surveillance
What is it?
The personal data gathered from consumers during routine purchases is saved in massive commercial databases.
Personal data: Name and address, age and gender, telephone number, e-mail address, credit card numbers, medical history, income, family information
Impact on privacy?
Loss of privacy. The personal information of us can be sold to anyone with enough money to pay for their use.
How?
We send in the warranty card on a new appliance, register software, seek medical assistance, or even sign a petition.
Mobile Surveillance
What is it?
The act of performing surveillance on phone conversations, location tracking, and data monitoring of a phone.
How?
As mobile phone users move, their devices will connect to nearby cell towers in order to maintain a strong signal even while the phone is not actively in use. These towers record identifying information about cellphones connected to them which then can be used to track individuals.
Impact on privacy?
Devices are vulnerable to security risks, especially if they contain sensitive or critical business data. This will lead to information leakage.
ID Cards Surveillance
What is it?
A technology that measures and analyzes human physical and/or behavioral characteristics for authentication, identification, or screening purposes.
How?
ID card contain information such as name, address, race, citizenship status and fingerprint minutiae.
Impact on privacy?
The consequence of losing one's card could potentially be a serious problem. If falls into the wrong hands, the lost ID card can be used as identity fraud, or even ID card selling syndicate to criminal.
