Music Before 600
Music before 600 was used for religion because during this time literacy was not the highest in Europe so to combat this music was used to help people recite the Bible. Before the birth of Christ Music came in the form of Instruments and the oldest instrument discovered was a Neanderthal Flute.

BAROQUE (1600 - 1750)
Characteristics/changes that are unique to Baroque Music are longer melodies, Virtuosic songs, opera becomes the main genre and even more, instruments are introduced to songs,Important composers during this time
- J.S. Bach (1685-1750), a German composer, he helped craft Virtuosic instrumental music, Fugue (advanced polyphonic form), and Keyboard music (harpsichord and organ)
- Handel (1685-1759) German/Italian/English composer (cosmopolitan). He was an Opera composer who Invented Oratorio (unstaged opera) and Wrote the Hallelujah Chorus

Classical 1750-1830
Classical music comprised of shorter melodies, the opera was still important but now becoming more popular in German-speaking countries, Chamber music was developed, and finally, mathematical proportion and perfection became very important.Important Composers
- W.A. Mozart (1756-1791) Austrian, who was a child prodigy and highly prolific with major compositions in every genre that are still performed today.
- Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) who developed Chamber Music (string quartet) and was Considered an innovator.

Romantic music was emotional and highly expressive encompassing philosophical, artistic, and literary themes. It emphasized greatly on lyrical melodies in addition to dramatic contrasts.
