Reproductive System
Sabrina Guzman P.6
Female
Male
Major Functions of the Female Reproductive System
Produce eggs (ova) to be Fertilised
To provide a space and conditions to allow a baby to develop
For this to happen the female reproductive system must allow sperm from a male to meet the ova of a female.
Secreting sex hormones such as estrogen
Giving birth to a baby, breastfeeding them after birth
Anatomy of Female Reproductive System
All of the parts are located in the Pelvis
Vulva, fallopian tube
The most important and common parts are the ovaries, uterus, cervix, and vagina.
External parts
Clitoris, Labium Minus, and Labium Majus
Hormones of Female Reproductive System
FSH
Stands for follicle-stimulating hormone, which is produced by the brain
LH
Stands for Leutenizing hormone, which is also produced by the brain,
GnRH
Stands for Gonadotropin-releasing Hormone, which is produced by the brain.
HCG
Which stands for Human chorionic gonadotropin, produced by the ovaries
Estrogen
This is the main female reproductive hormone, this is produced primarily by the ovaries in a non-pregnant woman. It prmotes the maturation and release of an ovum in every menstrual cycle. It is produced by the placenta during pregnancy.
Progesterone
Is one of the main hormone for the female reproductive system. Is produced by the Corpus Luteum in the ovaries. The function is to prepare the endometrium for the reception and development of a fetilised egg. It also suppresses the production of estrogen after ovulation.
Effects of the Female hormonal cycle
During luteal phase, LH and FSH levels decrease.
The ruptured follicle closes after releasing the egg and forms a corpus luteum, which produces progesterone.
The estrogen level decrease during the surge and the progesterone level starts to increase.
There are three phases of the menstrual cycle: Follicular(before the egg is released). Ovulatory (egg release), and Luteal phase ( after egg is release)
Viral and Parasitic STD's
Herpes
Caused by herpes virus. Cannont be cured but can be treated with antiviral medication.
Male Symptoms: small sores or clusters of blisters on penis
Female Symptoms: Blisters in or around vagina, fever and headache.
Genital Warts
Caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). No cure but prevent through vaccination. Symptoms same for male and female. Associated with cervical cancer in females.
Symptoms: Warts like tiny cauliflower. May cause itching but most often no pain. Warts may be not detected in females b/c they are located internally.
Acquired Immune Defeciency Syndrome (AIDS)
Cause by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Spread through sexual intercourse but can be passes sharing needles or from mother to baby though child birth or breast feeding. No cure only treatment.
Symptoms: No symptoms until immune system is activated, fever and fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, weight loss, opportunistic infections.
Pubic Lice/Crabs
Caused by a parasite that looks like a crab. Usually located around pubic area around the hair but can be found in axilia, eyelashes, moustaches. Spread through direct contact with lice even through bedding or clothes.
Symptoms: A terrible, persisting itching around area. Treated with shampoo or cream.
Trichomoniasis
Caused by a tiny parasite. Most commonly in women. Can be transmitted to baby during delivery.
Male Symptoms: No symptoms or discomfort in urethra or inflamed head of penis. Treatment through oral medication.
Female Symptoms: Itching and burning at the opening of vagina or vulva. Painful frequent urination. Heavy, unpleasant, frothy, greenish, yellow discharge.
Major Functions of the Male Reproductive System
To produce, maintain, and most importantly transport sperm and semen into the female reproductive system.
The discharged sperm goes into the female reproductive tract.
Produce, maintain, transport, and secrete spearm.
they produce and secrete sex hormones which is testosterone.
Anatomy of the Male Reproductive System
Vas Deference, Urinary bladder, Prostate
Seminal vesicle, rectum
Penis, Urethra, Scrotum, Testes, Epididymis,Anus
Ejaculatory duct, foreskin, and urethral opening
Most of the anatomy for the male is external unlike the female being mostly internal.
Hormones of the Male Reproductive System
The main male hormone is Testosterone
but following ones are Luteinizing Hormone LH, Follicle-Stimulating Hormone FSH,
FSH is necessary for the production of sperm
LH stimulates the production of testosterone, which is also needed for the production of sperm.
FSH and LH are produced by the pituitary gland. It is located at the base of the brain and it's responsible for many functions of the body.
Bacterial STD's
Gonorrhea
Caused by bacteria. Spread from close sexual contact or from mother to baby at birth. Can spread to other unlikely parts of body like: mouth, throat, rectum.
Male Symptoms: yellow or white discharge, burning or pain while urinating, frequent urination, and swollen testicles.
Female Symptoms: yellow or white discharge, burning or pain during urination, bleeding btwn periods and heavier or more painful periods, cramps or pain in the lower abdomen, and nausea or fever.
Syphilis
Goes symptomless for years. Cause by bacteria and can be cured with antibiotics int he early stages.Spread from person to person through direct contact with syphilis sores, semen, or vaginal fluids.
Early Symptoms: painful sore at point of contact callled chancres. Chancres can turn to copper-colored skin rashes on hand and feet, or cover the entire body.
Later Symptoms: Fever, headache, loss of appetite, Symptoms can disappear but bacteria still remains in body and eventually will travel to other organs including brain, eyes, heart, etc. causing organ damage or failure, and can lead to death.
Chlamydia
Most common std. Caused by bacteria. Can be cured by antibiotics.
Male Symptoms: discharge or burning while urinating, burning or itching around urethra, pain/swelling in testicles, slight fever.
Female Symptoms: no symptoms,, white/grey discharge, burning while urination, low pelvic STD's, bleeding btwn periods, slight fever.
First and fpr most a STD or STI is a sexually transmitted disease or infection. The can be spread from person to person through sexual inter course or oral contact.
