Formative Assessments:
What it is
Formative assessments are different types of methods teachers use to do evaluations of their students during the process of learning to determine their comprehension, learning needs and academic progress.
They help teachers identify what concepts students struggle with, the skills they have difficulty acquiring, the learning standards they are not meeting as well as what adjustments the teacher should make to help students.

What it's used for:
Formative assessments are "for learning" = it supports the learners during the learning process
It assesses how much students have learned up to a particular point in time

Summative Assessments:
What it is
A Summative Assessment is usually a high-stakes assessment that takes place at the end of a given time period. That time period could be at the end of a project, unit, course, semester, program or school year.
What it's used for:
1) They are used to determine if a student has learned what they were expected to learn.
2) They are used at the end of a specific period, so they are evaluative rather than diagnostic. This will be used for course placement decisions.
3) They resulting scores are used and factor into the student’s grades and their permanent academic record. These scores will be used in the college administration process.

Diagnostic Assessments:
What it is
Diagnostic assessment is a method used to collect information on what the students already know about the topic of study. Diagnostics tests are often written as multiple choices or short essay questions to get a quick understanding of the students current level. This is usually given at the beginning, as pre-assessments or pretests. The goal is to clarify any misconceptions in order to adjust or maintain one's teaching approach.
What it's used for:
- This allows the the instructor to get a better understanding of which instructional approach they should take in hopes that this test can reveal the intellectual, emotional idealogical standpoint of the student.
- To evaluate the students strengths and weaknesses, and how much the student knows or don't know about the topic.
- This helps the teacher in planning the lessons, create learning objectives and identify the areas that needs more or less time on.

Performance Assessments:
What is a Performance Based Assessment?
It is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select answers from ready-made options. They represent "a set of strategies for the application of knowledge, skills, and work habits through the performance of tasks that are meaningful and engaging to students" (Hibbard and others, 1996, p. 5). This type of assessment provides teachers with information about how the student is understanding and applying information.How does it look like?

Characteristics:
a. Promote active learning since they push students to understand when and where information can be used.
b. Curriculum-based. This type of assessment should be based on and referenced to the needs of the curriculum. This means that these assessments highly influence the instruction as a whole.
c. Positive performance assessments are highly and inherently instructional, not only because they're quite engaging given their relevance and pertinence to the class, but also because their composition and criteria need to be thoroughly explained before the formal assessment happens.
d. Complex + Authentic + Process/Product Oriented + Open-ended + Time-bound
PURPOSE - What are performance based assessments used for?:
- Performance assessments are used to offer an opportunity to demonstrate what the students know and not only what they can recall. It offers the chance to use knowledge and skills in context, showcasing a more complete picture of the learning process of the student.
- Performance assessments provide impetus for improving instruction and increase students' understanding of what they need to know and do in order to be successful. It makes them aware of the learning and the assessment process.

Assessment as learning
This is when students assess their own learning. They use a range of strategies to determine what they know and can do and to inform their future studies
Assessments as learning is used to:
- help students take responsibility for their own learning;
- encourage growth and development and cultivate a growth mindset
Examples include:

- Self assessment
- Reflection
