The Parable of the Lost Sheep, John 10 : 1- 21, JENNIFER LAUW, G10D -…
The Parable of the Lost Sheep
What is the parable and what does it mean?
Luke 15:1-7
“Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering
around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the
teachers of the law muttered, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbours together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”
This is then further explained by Jesus in John 10 where he talks about how the sheep will hear the voice of the owner and no one else because the sheep recognise the voice. The sheep will not follow the voice of a thief whose voice they do not recognise, and instead run away from the voice
Jesus then explains further saying that He is the shepherd and that He is the gate. He is the shepherd that never stops in order to be able to find us and He is the only person who goes through the gate and the only person who the sheep will follow. Those who came before Him were thieves and robbers and the sheep didn't listen to them. The sheep will only listen to Jesus.
In this parable, we are the lost sheep who strayed from out path because of sin (Isiah 53:6) and Jesus is the shepherd who went to find us. It explains how Jesus will go to find us and when we return to Him, the heavens will rejoice for we have repented our sins.
What lesson can we take?
We are weak and easy to despise. Sin will always take us away from God.
But Jesus is the way, the truth and the life for whoever follows Him and goes through Him shall find their way to the Father.
Jesus will not stop looking for us when we get lost since He loves like no other. His love for us is so strong that He will never abandon us nor forsake us and will always go to find us when we are lost.
We are easily lost and we are so easily tricked and tempted by sin. The only way we can live life truly is by following Jesus for the sheep will always follow the voice of their shepherd.
We need Jesus, We need His guidance and protection. We need to talk to God more so that we can listen to His words and know what we must do.
If we try to lead our own lives, we will just end up dying. We can't survive this life on our own. We need God.
Why are we the sheep?
No matter how we look at it, we are similar to sheep. In this big world, we easily fall into dangerous situations and we get trapped by sin.
We are dumb and foolish as we only pursue our selfish desires. We tend to always think 'the grass is greener on the other side' similar to how sheep will just always got to where they think the grass is greener.
This is why we need a shepherd - someone to guide us. Jesus is the shepherd who guides us through our our lives and makes sure that we follow Him and not get lost and when we do He will go to find us.
This is similar to how He will reach for us and call us so that we can come back to Him. He even carries us on His back when we come back as stated in Luke 15 : 1 - 6 which is a sign of how much he cherishes us and wishes to protect us.
We are dumb and stubborn. Jesus knows that and he knows that we are nothing but dust. Because we are so weak and fragile He came to be our guardian, the person who watches over us at all times and is ready to protect us no matter what. The person who is willing to sacrifice themselves for us just as how Jesus died on the cross so that we don't have to die. Now, He is protecting us again my trying to prevent us from committing sin by telling us to do what is right and asking us to listen to Him.
We need to listen to His voice, His word. That is the only way to know how to live life. We must live in Him. We need to build a relationship with Him and talk to Him often. We must pray so that we can talk to Him and so that He can talk to us.
Jesus loves us so very much, He even knows our names and how many strands of hair we have on our heads. We, the humans who have hurt Him are still something so precious in His eyes. God let His son be a sacrifice to pay for our sins. Is that not enough to show His love?
The more we realise how much our sins cost, the more we realise how much Christ sacrificed on the cross, the more we will not dare to sin. If we realise the amount of wrong doings we have done and how much we have hurt Him, we will be less likely to hurt Him again because of our love and fear of Him.
