Parts of Speech
is a term used in traditional grammar
for one of the nine main categories into which words
are classified according to their functions in sentences
such as nouns or verbs.
Noun
Nouns are a person, place, thing, or idea.
ex. Steve lives in Sydney. Mary uses pen and paper to write letters.
Pronoun
Pronouns stand in for nouns in a sentence.
Examples: I, you, he, she, it, ours, them, who, which, anybody, ourselves.
EX. I can’t believe this. The writer does not know what this is, but it exists.

Verbs are action words that tell what happens in a sentence.

Adjetive
Adjectives describe nouns and pronouns

Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, and even other adverbs.

preposition
Prepositions show spacial, temporal, and role relations between a noun or pronoun and the other words in a sentence.
EX. or the first few days of his life, Wilbur was allowed to live in a box near the stove in the kitchen.
Conjunction
Conjunctions join words, phrases, and clauses in a sentence
EX. the white kitten was cute, but I chose the tabby instead.
Articles and Determiners
Articles and determiners function like adjectives by modifying nouns
but they are different than adjectives in that they are necessary for a sentence to have proper syntax.
EX. "What a unique discovery."
Interjection
Interjections are expressions that can stand on their own or be contained within sentences.
EX. Ooh, that's a beautiful monkey.
