resistance to social influence - Coggle Diagram
resistance to social influence
social support
conformity
pressure reduced when others arent conforming
asch = doesnt have to be right just going against the trend
they act as a model
obedience
pressure to obey drops when someone else isnt following
milgram variation where a pts was joined with a disobedient confederate. obedience = 10%
doesnt copy behaviour but still challenges authority
acts as a model freeing the pts to act upon own conscious
Evaluation
research support for conformity
Allen and Levine (1971)
repeated Asch study and found conformity decreased when there was a dissenting peer
even if they said they had vision difficulties and wore think glasses so wouldnt be able to judge lines
supports that resistance isnt following the dissenter but they just enable a person to be free from the pressures of the group
research support - obedience
Gamson (1982)
higher resistance than milgram when working in groups
29/33 groups (88%) rebelled
shows that peer support leads to greater resistance for obedience
Locus of Control (LOC)
Rotter (1966)
internal vs external control
internal = things happen due to them
external = things happen without own control
continuum
scale: high internal LOC-----high external LOC
resistance
internal = able to resist pressures
base decisions on own beliefs
more self confident
higher intelligence
less need for social approval
evaluation
research support for LOC and obedience
Holland (1967)
repeated milgrams study and measured whether pts internal or external
37% internals didnt go to highest shock
internals showed greater resistence
increses validity of explanation and our confidence to apply it
23% externals didnt contine
contradictory research
twenge (2004)
analysed 40 years of LOC studies
shows people have become more resistance to obedience but also more external
explanation suggests that people should have become more internal
challenges the link between LOC and resisting behaviour = validity
however could be due to a changing society which is out of personal control
