- - - - Types of Performance Assessment
        
        First division is determined by the time needed for assessment and whether students are provided the opportunity to revise or improve their initial responses. Both types of performance assessment require students to carry out some activity:
        
        Performance Event – This is an on-demand performance assessment on which students are given little or no time to rehearse before performing or responding, and limited opportunities to improve their initial performance. Such assessments may take a class period or less to administer.
        
        Performance Task – In this type of performance assessment, students have days, weeks, or months to prepare a response. The resultant work may be lengthy and comprise multiple parts, involving multiple responses of different types to multiple prompts. Embedded in the task may be written-response items, presentations, papers, student self-reflections, performances, and so forth.

        Performance assessments don't have clear-cut right or wrong answers. Rather, there are degrees to which a person is successful or unsuccessful. Thus, teachers need to evaluate the performance in a way that will allow them to take those varying degrees into consideration. This can be accomplished by creating rubrics.
        
        A rubric is a rating system by which teachers can determine at what level of proficiency a student is able to perform a task or display knowledge of a concept. With rubrics, you can define the different levels of proficiency for each criterion. Teachers can either utilize previously developed rubrics or create their own. When using any type of rubric, teachers need to be certain that the rubrics are fair and simple. Also, the performance at each level must be clearly defined and accurately reflect its corresponding criterion.

        In order to administer any good assessment, teachers must have a clearly defined purpose and ask several important questions:
        
        • What concept, skill, or knowledge am I trying to assess?
        
        • What should my students know?
        
        • At what level should my students be performing?
        
        • What type of knowledge is being assessed: reasoning, memory, or process?
        
        By answering these questions, you can decide what type of activity best suits you assessment needs.
        
        The features of a quality performance task:
        
        • Real-world scenario: students assume roles in real-world scenarios.
        
        • Authentic, complex process: scenarios reflect complex and ambiguity of real-world challenges.
        
        • Higher-order thinking: requires critical thinking, analytic reasoning, and problem solving
        
        • Authentic performance: the ‘product’ reflects what a professional would produce.
        
        • Transparent evaluation criteria: the learning outcomes drive the creation of the task.
      - It is difficult to write multiple-choice or completion-based tests that go beyond the recall level. For example, the results of an English test may indicate that a student knows each story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. However, these results do not guarantee that a student will write a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Because of this, educators have advocated the use of performance-based assessments.
      - This type of assessment provides teachers with information about how a child understands and applies knowledge. Also, teachers can integrate performance-based assessments into the instructional process to provide additional learning experiences for students.
      - Tasks built around student interests engage students and help them make connections to their personal lives. This gives them a purpose to apply effort to the task. When students perform tasks that are meaningful and engaging to them, they are able to take ownership of their learning and effectively work, either independently or in collaboration, depending on the requirement of the task.
