Why it's used

Definition :
Refers to a wide different methods that teachers use to do in-process evaluations of students. The assessments look at student comprehension and the learning needs of the students.

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS

Definition
Evaluate student learning, skill acquisition, and academic achievement at the conclusion of a defined instructional period - typically at the end of a project, unit, course, semester, program, or school year.
Why it is used
The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end o fan instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value
Types
End-of-term Examination
A final examination or assessment is one of the most common methods of classroom evaluation. Examinations have a simple framework - the teacher create relevant questions and students respond to these questions within a timeframe. It tests students' knowledge of the subject matter and produce quantitative results that help teachers to grade students and know how well they have performed.
In-class Chapter Tests
Mini examinations that happen at the end of a topic or section of training, which are used to determine how well does students understand key chapter concepts and help them prepare for the final examination at the end of the course.
Creative Portfolio
A creative portfolio showcases that student's creativity, knowledge of the coursework, and how they have uniquely applied that knowledge. It can include images, infographics, and small to medium-length texts like essays or one pagers, which relate to the learning areas.
Group Projects
Group projects is a great way to test students' knowledge. After a training on teamwork and conflict resolution, students could be arranged in different groups with assigning tasks, and see how they create frameworks and solve a specific problem.

Performance Assessment (Erin)
Definition
:"Performance assessment involves the demonstration and application of knowledge, skills, and work habits through what is known as a performance task." "Performance assessment, also known as alternative or authentic assessment, is a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.“
Types of Performance-Based Assessments (Griffith& Lim, 2012)
There are three types of performance-based assessment from which to choose: products, performances, or process-oriented assessments (McTighe & Ferrara, 1998). A product refers to something produced by students providing concrete examples of the application of knowledge. Examples can include brochures, reports, web pages and audio or video clips.
These are generally done outside of the classroom and based on specific assignments.
Performances allow students to show how they can apply knowledge and skills under the direct observation of the teacher. These are generally done in the classroom since they involve teacher observation at the time of performance. Much of the work may be prepared outside the classroom but the students “perform” in a situation where the teacher or others may observe the fruits of their preparation. Performances may also be based on in-class preparation. They include oral reports, skits and role-plays, demonstrations, and debates
Process-oriented assessments provide insight into student thinking, reasoning, and motivation. They can provide diagnostic information on how when students are asked to reflect on their learning and set goals to improve it. Examples are think-alouds, self/peer assessment checklists or surveys, learning logs, and individual or pair conferences.

DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENTS
sets of written questions (multiple choice or short answer) that assess a learner's current knowledge base or current views on a topic/issue to be studied in the course. They can be administer at the beginning of a course to evaluate students’ strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills before their instruction. They can also be administered at the end of a course to assess student progress.

Definition:
The term diagnostic assessment is defined as “assessment that is used to identify a student's needs and abilities and the student's readiness to acquire the knowledge and skills outlined in the curriculum expectations.
Why it is used?
Diagnostic Assessment is used for learning when taking action to adjust teaching, and it plays a significant role in improving learning outcomes for all students.
It assesses what the learner already knows, the nature of difficulties that he/she has, which if undiagnosed might limit their engagement in new learning.
