Symbolism
The symbolism that is shown in the masque of the red death is to show death and that everything is symbolizing it.
Symbolism:
The Ebony Clock:
"A gigantic clock of Ebony."
It symbolizes the inevitability of death & a constant reminder to the party goers.
The Seven Colors of the Room:
The rooms resemble life
Blue-Birth the beginning of Life
Purple-Growth
Green-Youth
Orange-Adulthood
White- Elderly
Violet-Dying
Black-Death itself
The Red Death:
A very twisted, violent version of death.
Gothic motifs
Gothic motifs is a style of writing which include sear, horror, death, and gloom.
Gothic motifs:
Clashing time periods: It shows that people were fighting with a plague back then, just like us now. It shows how everyone is scared.
Super natural forces: Red Death, it shows how people are scared of it and they are trying to find a solution to this natural force.
Terror vs horror: the figure, the red death.
Eerie settings
The outside world,
it is the outside world because of the pandemic going on and it is creepy outside.
The Abbey:
The abbey is a place in a castle that is safe from the outside world. The doors are closed and everyone is trapped inside. Its a place that no one can go in and out. The abbey has a very threatening arora.

“There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the sympathy of his fellow men.”
In this quote Poe establishes the mood and setting of the story with the vivid description of the Red Death.

“The panes here were scarlet–a deep color….In the corridors that followed the suite, there stood, opposite to each window, a heavy tripod, bearing a brazier of fire, that projected its rays through the tinted glass and so glaringly illuminated the room. And thus were produced a multitude of gaudy and fantastic appearances…The effect of the firelight that streamed upon the dark hangings through the blood tinted panes was ghastly in the extreme”
So much for peaceful death. The images created by the brazier of fire and blood tinted glass give the room of death a ghastly appearance.
