perspective: is the point of view on which people see and understand events going on in the world around them
continuity and change: historians recognise that over time some things stay the same and others change.
cause and effect: aims to identify the reasons why events have occurred and the resulting consequences from it

empathy: is the ability to walk in someone's else's shoes- to be aware of, and sensitive to their feelings, thoughts and experiences
significance: relates to the importance assigned to aspects of the past, such as events, discoveries, people and historical events

the great depression caused massive unemployment and major social problems in japan which lead to a military takeover of the government
the 'Greater East Asian Co-prosperity Sphere' was an idea that East Asia should exist free western influence
the idea proposed that japan acts as the leader of a bloc of Asia and Pacific nations working together
designed to allow jJapan greater influence and access to oil and rubber resources in neighbouring countries

America wanted to achieve lasting peace with a treaty that punished Germany, but not too harshly so that they would want revenge one day

Policy of appeasement
in 1933 hitler started to: violate terms of treaty of versailles, increase size of military, increased production of weapons and ammunition, aims to regain territories taken from Germany
britains and french response to this event was to tolerate them, known as a policy of appeasement
this policy was followed because they believed giving in to hitlers demand would avoid another war, either france nor britain could afford to go to war, some people believed that the treaty was too harsh on germany and that hitlers actions were justifies.
