Diagnostic Assessment
Essentially a pretest or pre-assessment, helps to guage where students are and what areas of a subject need more or less focus when developing lessons or units.

Performance Assessment
A way to see the progress and application of a students knowledge on a subject during the lesson or unit. Generally an assignment is used to apply multiple points of knowledge within a subject with observation and note of any lacking understanding. Can also give teacher feedback mid-lesson.

When to Use
Generally this form of assessment is placed with assignments during the study of a particular lesson

Formative & Summative
Formative formative assessment is a process that "involves the gathering and analysis of assessment-elicited evidence for the purpose of determining when and how to adjust instructional activities or learning tactics in order to achieve learning goals"
Student Centered Formative Assessment use formative assessment apps and games such as Kahoot, Socrative, Plickers, and Poll Everywhere to check for understanding and encourage student self-assessment. Also, activities where students work collaboratively and assess one another is a good approach.
Basic Strategies Basic strategies may include using hand signals to gauge understanding within a large group, Brainstorming before introducing a new topic, exit tickets at the end of a lesson, pair work to find answers together and then present answers to the class, and finally using a white board to have students demonstrate their understanding.
